Recent News – January 2016
I figured it might be worthwhile to try to occasionally do bulk news and events posts in lieu of lots of shorter single posts on local food/drink happenings…
This is more news from December, but the Chinese restaurant Laughing Buddha over in Solomon’s has closed up shop. Local news has hinted that Salsa’s, one of the local Mexican chains, has applied for a liquor license in that location. This is much to the dismay of the other SOMD Food editor, JP, who may not be able to continue living without their Mongolian Beef. It’s definitely a disappointment, because they really did have good food, but I could also definitely see how a Mexican restaurant might do well over there.
On January 20th, Showtime Deli, opened in the old Rita’s location on Great Mills Rd just outside of NAS Pax River’s Gate 2. Showtime Deli’s run by Jonathon Gelrud and his father Paul Gelrud, who’s run a deli by the same name as well as a number of other kitchens, in years past. I think this is pretty good news. Having a good local deli, especially one within driving distance for lunch from the base, definitely fills a niche. Don’t get me wrong, there’s plenty of decent sandwich shops in the Lexington Park area, but they just aren’t quite your typical delis.
Mission BBQ has also hooked my coworkers and I with their new black plate special, Smoked Ranch Steak. They’ve got a few more details and a picture over on their website, but basically it’s a tender piece of steak with a nice salt and pepper crust that’s smoked and then seared. It comes out super tender. The ranch sauce side is also decent and compliments it pretty well, but the steak is outstanding alone.
